Scuba Diving Computer – How do you calculate your SAC rate? I don’t have an air integrated computer, just an SPG and depth gauge.

What do you think? Please comment below to tell me.

According to the website cited below,

SAC Rate = (DCR x 33) / (Depth + 33);
where DCR = Depth Consumption Rate [pounds/minute]

So one way you can calculate the SAC rate, is to first take note of how much air you have in the diving cylinder (by looking at the SPG). Then, one minute later, check the SPG again to see how much air is left in the cylinder – the difference between these two values (obtained from SPG readings), is equal to the DCR. In addition, the depth can be read off of the depth gauge.

Now that you have your DCR, and depth, you can now determine your SAC rate.

“Let’s look at an example. Suppose you did a 50 foot dive for 25 minutes and used 1700 pounds of air. This would mean our DCR is 1700/25 or 68 pounds per minute. Using this in our formula we get:

SAC Rate = (68 x 33) / (50+33)

or: SAC Rate = 2244/83 or about 27 pounds per minute. “
